Okay, Google is failing me and ChatGPT is happily hallucinating this feature on libraries that don't have it, so I hope the Fediverse can help me. I'm decently sure there exists some project for firmware running on an ESP32 that allows you to define LED effects using a program you enter in a browser interface that gets interpreted run-time on the ESP32 to generate the RGB values for the attached LEDs, kinda like a shader. I for the life of me can't find the name of the thing anymore. Anyone have any ideas here?

@sprite_tm I love everything about WLED except this. Always run into a situation where “if I could just tweak the code a little bit here…”

I also do LED setups with complex 2D and 3D mappings, rotations etc where I use a shader approach but have to guess & compile.

WASM exists, but so does Java…there are some uC JVMs. Interpreted languages…Micropython is definitely too slow. Maybe a hyper focused Lua that does no heavy lifting but defines a shader node graph. Visually.

@Simon Nope, that also defines the effects at compile-time. I want it to be defineable at runtime.

@Garrett Mace I think Pixelblaze is pretty optimized for speed. I imagine (hope?) they tokenize and even compile the code while it is written in the browser, a la QuickJS. They get extra mileage by making the standard datatype 16.16 fixed point, which is pretty ideal for LED effects and quick as well as most ops can be done with native 32-bit register ops on the ESP32.
